Happy 1st Birthday Maya (Our Dogo Argentino)!

Dear Maya,

I know you can’t read this and have NO idea what the Internet is, but I wanted to share our story anyway.

You came into our life 8.5 months ago, you were already 3.5 months old and looking for a place to call home.  Shaun and I were looking for a Dogo Argentino for over a year.  As soon as I saw you, I knew you would be a great fit!  You were independent, spunky and reminded me of myself.  We had to convince Shaun that you belonged with us, but it didn’t long for you to make him smile too.

The first night we brought you home, there was a loud thunderstorm.  I slept beside you, thinking you might be scared.  Thing is, you’re the toughest girl I know and snored through the storm like it was nothing.

The next day, you tried to eat the area rug.  I scolded you once and only once, and you never ever did it again.  You were extremely upset that I yelled at you and went straight to bed.  After about 20 minutes of a self appointed “time out”, you came to me and asked to cuddle.

You always want to cuddle.  I love that about you.

The day I let you sit on the back deck and watch strangers go by, you growled at them.  You’re little hairs on the back of your neck would stand up and you growled harder, but as soon as you came inside, you wanted to cuddle.  You’re the perfect watch dog.

If you had an accident it was always on the bathroom floor and it was usually my fault for not taking you out right when you asked.

You were spayed a month after your ears were cropped and you didn’t mind at all.  You were cool with the ear posting process and to this day you LOVE having your ears rubbed.

You LOVE mornings!  In fact when we wake up (or when you wake us up at 5:30am) you “smile”.  You “smile” at me when I come home after a long day, or if I get you a new collar and compliment you on it.

We feel very fortunate to have met your breeder, Wayne Dibbley, and hope that one day we can get you a friend to play with.  In the meantime, we hope you love living in the country and hanging with your crazy parents.

Happy Birthday Maya!

    shawn - Hi
At this moment, I’m in awe of your incredable pictures. I know of Wayne and I’m pretty sure that some of your pictures might be on his Facebook page cause I was like “wow” what a shot.

I’m also a little jealous and hurting inside somewhat. I totally fell in love with the Dogo breed about 1 year ago. I have been a dog owner and lover all my life, same as my wife Michelle. When I started to research this breed it was to my utmost excitement that a Breeder(Wayne) is located just outside of the city. I have tried, unsuccessfully unfortunately to convince my wife Michelle, of this gorgeous dog but she would not accept or agree with me. We have 2 children ages 7 and 5 yrs. These heated discussions would sometimes turn into arguments. Last week she went on a 3 hr web search about everything realted about the Dogo breed and came up with more aggressive, prey, hog hunting stories that I could think of, instead of the thousand stories like yourself. Admitting defeat, we just came back from Toronto and bought a “Cockapoo”. My children are in total love and excitement since this is their first dog and our fist dog as a family, yet when I see pictures and stories like yours I’m at the opposite end of this spectrum.

This sucks, I, we, are really responsible people and this dog would have had a great life. Wayne had several that were available for me, I never even had a chance to see or pet one.

So, congratulations on owning this beautiful creater, nice to see that your significant other was on board with you also.

And again your artistic photography is really outstanding

    regards Shawn McAiney

    admin - Hi Shawn,

Your message broke my heart! Although your wife’s concerns are her own and I realize getting over the fear of such a large muscular dog around children may take some time, I hope she learns that dogs are typically the product of their environment. This being said, I can honestly say that Maya’s behavior is the way it is because I have a great team mate to help me with training her. If my significant other wasn’t on board, there’s no way Maya would be the dog she is now. Although, Wayne did a lovely job with her parents and starting her off in a family environment, we had to continue that same vibe at home for her to be the best she could be. Until your wife realizes these dogs are just as family friendly as your new cockapoo, I wouldn’t suggest getting one. In the meantime, I am sure Wayne would let you sneak by the kennel to check out the breed in person. I’ll warn you though, the first time we did… we came home with a puppy. haha. In all seriousness, if your wife ever wanted chat about her concerns or ask questions down the road, I’d be happy to hear her out and I’m sure Wayne would do the same. Also, thanks so much for your kind words about my work! Truly means a lot 🙂
