Tip for an Officiant, a Photography Perspective…

Dear Officiant,

First of all, let me just say that I admire your job.  You are the one that holds the power to join couples as man and wife and that’s totally awesome!

I wonder, however, if we could collaborate better to help make a wedding day that much more awesome for the couple?

I am a firm believer that knowledge is power and by writing you today, I thought I would share a visual tip from a photographer’s perspective in hopes to strengthen our working relationship.

Last weekend I shot a wedding where the officiant did something really great!  She moved to the right when the couple had their first kiss.  I know it’s not one of those things you think of at the time, but it makes such a difference between an awkward photo and a great first kiss moment photo.  For example here’s a comparison:

I’m not a picky-over-posed photographer, I’m really not.  I would just like to see the photo reflect the moment for the couple.  I mean, I’m pretty sure they’re not thinking about you when they have their first kiss as man and wife, but when they go through their photos later…. there you are.

Hopefully, having the above visual will help you see where we photographers are coming from and the ceremony becomes more about the couple than a Photographer vs. Officiant vs. Video Guy Battleground.
